MINISTRY OF FINANCE SIGNS A 15 MILLION USD MULTILATERAL AGREEMENT WITH WFP

The Ministry of Finance and Planning and World Food Program signed a ‘Multilateral Cooperation Agreement’ to boost the food distribution and humanitarian services to vulnerable people in South Sudan.

In his address to the media during the event, the Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Dier Tong Ngor said the government has decided to offer 15 Million USD out of the recently acquired 115 Million USD of Food Shock Window funds from the International Monetary Funds as part of the Rapid Credit Facility.

Minister Dier said the program is relevant and timely considering the rising number of returnees and refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan. He added that the funds should help boost the activities of World Food Program in South Sudan specially in boosting their school feeding programs and food distribution to those affected by man-made and natural calamities.

This process, he said would be monitored by both government and donor community to ensure the funds reach the vulnerable and needy in an effective, transparent and accountable manner.

On her part, the Country Director for World Food Program, Ms. Mary Ellen McGroarty thanked the government specially ministry of Finance and Planning for prioritizing food distribution and feeding program to the vulnerable communities in the country.

She added that the gesture shows full commitment by the government to ensure sufficient food supply and curb the threats of starvation and food shortage posed by climate change, conflict and shortage in food supply globally.

Its worth noting that the ministry of Finance has also pledged to disburse some of the RCF funds acquired through IMF’s Food Shock Window to other UN agencies such as IOM to boost their operations in the country as part of joint cooperation between the government and International Community.
